Effective April 22, 2010, any individual who performs renovations, repairs, or painting in Pre- 1978 homes or child-occupied facilities should be EPA Lead Safe Certified. Individuals as well as firms that are not certified are subject to fines totaling up to $37,500 each day.

- More than 6 square feet of indoor painted surface area
- Over 20 square feet of outdoor painted surface
Companies involved in this type of work should be registered with the EPA or an EPA-authorized state. One or more person on the actual job site must be a Certified Renovator, which is accomplished by getting the 8-hour Lead Renovator Initial Certification Training Course. Renewal of this training course becomes necessary every 5 years by the EPA.
